Are you suffering from a phobia and find that it is having a negative effect on your life and want to do something about it?
“I shouldn’t be so afraid”.
Phobias are intense, often persistent fears of specific objects, situations, or things that are illogical and excessive. But whether or not the fears are illogical doesn’t in any way subdue the alarm that is experienced by both adults and children when cued by the presence or anticipation of the feared object or situation. In fact most often when a person comes to see me in hopes that hypnosis will help them eradicate the phobic reaction they tell me, “I know I shouldn’t be afraid of this, I know it is completely illogical but before I even start to realize what’s going on my heart starts racing and I get scared, why”?
Sometimes, though not always the original fear is stored in the brain below conscious awareness so often the person doesn’t even remember where, when or how it started, but the subconscious mind does.
Learned Fears and Phobias
Fears are common even expected when we are young but there are only two inborn (instinctual) fears, the fear of falling and the fear of loud noises. All other fears are learned. Fears and phobias are forms of negative hypnosis due to adverse conditioning where the body over responds to the relatively innocuous, fear producing event or object.
Fears and Phobias and Negative Hypnosis
Usually, though not always during childhood when the mind doesn’t have the full capacity to truly judge or analyze a situation, a child’s mind can create real or irrational fears, which can leave negative imprints in the brain (subconscious). As an adult you may still be responding to those old forgotten memories because subsequent events that reminds the subconscious of the original event can now trigger anxious or fearful feelings. This is because the subconscious mind learns to make associations. Fear originating in adulthood tend to increase once the triggering event is re-experienced.
Conscious verses Subconscious
All habits and routines emotions, feelings and core beliefs are not held in our awareness, our logical conscious mind but in our subconscious mind, the part of the mind that controls nearly every choice we make. It is also this part of the mind that controls our autonomic nervous system. Once the old fear is recognized by the subconscious mind it kicks in the fight or flight response…automatically, without our conscious control.
Feared situations now automatically trigger intense agitation causing a vicious, unending cycle of worry, negative anticipation, apprehension, and feelings of impending doom, which may in turn lead to panic attacks or phobic reactions. The distress in the feared situation interferes significantly with the person’s normal routine.
Subconscious Programing and Reconditioning Old Learned Responses With Hypnosis
Patterns of thoughts and behaviors are a product of our subconscious programming. Some of which may be useful to us and some that may be holding us back from achieving a more fulfilling life. Until we become aware of these patterns and change them much of our fears will continue.During hypnosis the hypnotherapist re-conditions the mind where the fears where originally stored, in the subconscious.
Different kinds of phobias
Agoraphobia is the fear of being trapped and not able to escape. The victim of this type of fear may avoid busses, planes theaters and so on.Social Phobia, characterized by placing oneself in situations where others have an opportunity to observe or judge one’s behavior. The fear of public speaking is an example of a social phobia. Social Phobia is excessive self-consciousness when using a public rest room, fear of strangers and so forth.
Fear comes in many different forms, including embarrassment, worry, doubt, and despair to name a few. Fear can agitate us, torment us, and rob us of the ability to develop, grow and achieve our goals. The exaggerated or distorted threats caused by fear can override our thinking, resulting to some degree, in mental, emotional physical or spiritual paralysis.
